Officer Rogelio Santander died at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Dallas Police Department. He was 27 years old.

Officer Crystal Almeida, 26, and Home Depot loss prevention officer Scott Painter still are in critical condition. Both Almeida and Santander served in the department’s Northeast Division for the past three years. Almeida also is a patrol officer for White Rock Valley’s Enhanced Neighborhood Patrol program.

The shooter, Armando Luis Juarez, has been charged with capital murder and is being held on $1.1 million bail.

An off-duty officer working at Home Depot thought Juarez was shoplifting and detained him. The officer learned he had an outstanding felony warrant, and called Almeida and Santander to the scene, according to the Dallas Morning News. As they tried to arrest him, Juarez pulled out a handgun and started firing. He then fled in a white Ford truck.

He and his girlfriend were captured after a police chase that started in southeast Dallas and ended near Dallas Love Field. It’s unknown whether she will face charges as well.
