Brent, Louis, Jean and Shane Bono

The deadline to file as a candidate in the scheduled May election for Richardson ISD school board came and went Friday, with only incumbents Jean Bono and Kim Caston declaring their intention to run. As Archie Bunker would say, that makes Bono and Caston the “ipso fatso” winners.

Former trustee David Tyson Jr. had sought a delay of the election while a judge considered his lawsuit alleging that RISD’s system dissuades minority participation and violates the Voting Rights Act. His suit seeks a change from at-large to single member districts.

Last year’s school board election was particularly contentious, with seven candidates running to fill three spots. During that election, the dialogue at multiple debates and over social media was quite heated at times, and even Dallas Observer’s Jim Schutze weighed in, saying “ostracism, rumors and personal attacks” are just part of local politics today.

As you can read here, I disagreed.

Bono, a resident of Lake Highlands, and Caston, a resident of the Pearce feeder pattern, will serve three-year terms beginning in May.
