Wallace Elementary’s new sixth grade cheer squad
What could be more American than cheerleaders?
Sixth grade girls on Wallace Elementary’s new squad are having a blast attending soccer and basketball games, cheering for their classmates. The girls, say sponsors April Byrd, a counselor at Wallace, and Megan Williams, a 3rd grade teacher, are becoming fast friends and leaders at the school. For some, it’s a chance to dive into an American life they’d only dreamed of.
About 25% of Wallace’s student body arrived in Lake Highlands from refugee camps in Burma or Thailand. Others arrived here from countries all over the world. About 64% of Wallace families are economically disadvantaged. Wallace is a diverse campus, and Byrd and Williams have worked to ensure the cheer squad reflects that diversity.
The girls pay dues to participate and those funds have provided the pom poms used at games, but Byrd has now set up a Go Fund Me page to raise money to purchase uniforms. If you’d like to contribute, you’ll find the link here.
“They are the sweetest group of young ladies, and they love being cheerleaders. They cheer for basketball and soccer games, practice every other week, and work to be positive role models for the school,” says Byrd. “Please consider donating to help our team look the best they can.”
