It’s been another rough month of crime in Lake Highlands, with three sexual assaults, perpetrated by three different men, reported in a single week.

Two of those three attacks took place in apartment complexes, a longtime source of debate in our neighborhood. We regularly see commenters lament that they should be knocked down, erased from the neighborhood, in an effort to keep crime out. As we explored in the 2014 article “How dangerous is Lake Highlands?”, the answer is not so easy.

“With our abundance of dense zoning, we have more than our fair share of challenges, but the violent events are symptoms of deep-rooted emotional and structural issues that are not exclusive to Lake Highlands.”

Luckily, our community has always found light in the dark times. Programs like PhotoVoice and Seek the Peace are taking creative strides to curb violence in our neighborhood.
