Overnight Sunday July 23, Carlos Ayala, who police describe as a 31-year-old Latin male, was in his car — reportedly with a passenger — in the lot of the Monticito Creek Apartments, 11333 Amanda Lane, when two armed men approached his window and commenced shooting.

Though badly wounded and bleeding profusely, Ayala managed to drive away from the complex, fleeing southward. Finally he crashed at the McCree and Pandora Circle intersection a few blocks from the site of the crime. The suspects did not follow, but fled in another direction.

Emergency responders took Ayala to the hospital emergency room, but he died from the gunshots. CBS local news reports that the passenger’s identity and condition is unknown at this time.

According to his public Facebook page, Ayala was a Mesquite Horn graduate who once worked at AutoZone. Friends mourning Ayala’s death have erected a cross in his memory, as an investigation takes place.
