RISD Trustee Kris Oliver

Monday night’s Richardson ISD school board meeting was a busy one, but one agenda item caught a few district watchers by surprise. Kris Oliver announced his decision to resign from the board, effective in May. He has served since 2010 and has half of his 3-year term left to go.

“At last night’s meeting, the Board of Trustees accepted my resignation from Place 3,” announced Oliver on social media this morning. “I am resigning so that my daughter can seek employment with the district upon graduation from college this Spring,” announced Oliver. “I will continue to serve until a replacement is elected in May, and will do my best to ensure a smooth transition.”

When the election is held, three seats will now be on the ballot. Although RISD is an “at large” district, board seats are generally seen as loosely divided between the schools in order to have representation from all areas of the district. Oliver hails from the Richardson High School feeder pattern, Dr. Kristin Kuhne (running again) is from the Pearce area, and Justin Bono (running again) is from Lake Highlands. Oliver didn’t say if he is aware of interest or if he has recruited anyone in the RHS feeder pattern – or elsewhere in the district – to run in his place.

If you’d like to run, candidate packets will be available beginning January 13 in the RISD Administration Building’s Elections Office. Election Day is Saturday, May 6.

Thank you for your loyal and dedicated service, Kris Oliver!
