Lake Highlands Junior Women’s League suffered no Sophomore Curse – their Light Up the Highlands Christmas tree lighting and community gathering was bigger and better than last year’s inaugural event.

“My favorite thing so far has been petting Dasher and Dancer,” said White Rock Elementary third grader Mary Moseley, who spent much of her time giving love to Santa’s reindeer. “Lots of my friends are here,” added Moseley, who ran around the park near the Lake Highlands North Recreation Center enjoying warm temperatures and live entertainment. “I didn’t get to come last year.”

Laney Harper, also a WRE 3rd grader, agreed that the reindeer were “awesome,” but she wasn’t ready to declare a favorite.

“We haven’t written letters to Santa or made balloon animals yet.”

“My favorite thing was having my picture taken with Santa,” said Faith, a WRE Kindergartener. Judging by the smudges on her face, she also enjoyed her hot chocolate.

Faith’s friend, Pasquelle, said the best thing about Light Up the Highlands was the chance to play with all her friends. She did take a minute, though, to tell Santa what she wanted for Christmas.

“I want 23 Barbies,” said Pasquelle with confidence. “If I can’t have that, I’d like a new house for my family.”

Following the tree lighting, contemporary worship band Shane and Shane held a concert on the lawn.

“The women of the Lake Highlands Junior Women’s League are so grateful for everyone in the community who came out last night to help us kick off the Christmas season with the 2nd Annual Light Up the Highlands,” said Jacy Russell, event chair. “The evening was filled with holiday music and festivities and a beautiful Christmas tree lighting. It was a great night for the entire community of Lake Highlands.”
