Members of 100 Women in Lake Highlands are on a mission to provide free Thanksgiving meals to needy families of students at Thurgood Marshall Elementary in Lake Highlands, but they need some help. They hosted a fundraiser last week – their first annual Hops and Hope – but they didn’t quite make it to their goal. More than 90% of TME students qualify for free or reduced lunch through NSLP, the National School Lunch Program, and that’s more than 500 families that may go without a holiday meal.

The 100 Women of LH organization says they’ll continue taking donations of $45 – which will provide a prepared Thanksgiving turkey, two sides, rolls and a dessert for one family – until 9 a.m. Monday morning. That’s when the grocery story preparing the food requires a head count.

“We are humbled by this community’s continued love and support,” said founding 100 Women member Crispin Deneault as she lobbyied friends and family to get the word out. “It’s heartbreaking, but we want these kids to know that there are people out there thinking about them, praying for them, working for them and ultimately rooting for them this holiday season.”

Checks in any amount may be made to “Thurgood Marshall PTA” and delivered to Deneault’s mailbox, which she’ll check all weekend, 9946 Tanglevine.
