That’s what Wade Smith told us when we interviewed him in 2009. At the time, he was playing for the Kansas City Chiefs; he later became a Pro-Bowler with the Houston Texans.

Now, though, the former NFL player is a a children’s author. And Thursday morning at 10:30, he’ll be reading his first book, “Smitty Hits the Books,” at the Audelia Library and talking about what the NFL means to him. It’s a storytime geared for kids 4 and up, and their questions are encouraged.

Smith still keeps up with the Wildcats, and even attended a LHHS pep rally last fall to support the football team. He also established the Wade Smith Foundation to provide community support for youth programs throughout the DFW and Houston areas.

His storytime series at Dallas Public Library branches is a partnership between his foundation and the Mayor’s Summer Reading Club. After the Audelia storytime, Smith will do three other readings this week, at the Timberglen, Skyline and White Rock Hills libraries.
