The garbage truck comes, empties your blue roller bin and drives away. Then what happens?
The Advocate visited the McCommas Bluff Landfill in 2009. It receives about 5,000 tons of garbage a day, about 2 million tons per year. It is the biggest landfill in Texas and one of the biggest in the United States.
And it’s a moneymaker for the City of Dallas. The dump produces about 5.5 million cubic feet of gas daily, and the city makes almost $1 million a year in methane sales.
It also accepts garbage from other counties, commercial entities and others for $21 per ton, and the city nets more than $25 million a year from that enterprise.
