For Meredith Alloway, making her first movie isn’t the hard part. She’s not flustered at the prospect of casting her film, and she’s not intimidated at working with actors from some of Hollywood’s most well-connected families. She’s confident about her vision for the short film and what she wants to say. Now, she just has to raise the money.

Meredith, who graduated from Lake Highlands High School in 2007 and SMU’s theatre program, has created a Kickstarter page to raise the $10,000 she needs to proceed with her movie. The short film, entitled Interior Teresa, is a re-imagining of St. Teresa of Avila set in modern day. In it, Meredith, who serves as writer, director and producer, explores spirituality and today’s youth and culture. She hopes the success of the short film will lead to a full length feature. In fact, this week it was featured as one of the Kickstarter “Staff Picks” and one of their “Projects We Love.”

Meredith plans to shoot the film in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood at the end of February. Her young stars include Kara Young (Girl Code) and Jake Cannavale (Nurse Jackie, Fish in the Dark). If that name rings a bell, his parents, Bobby Cannavale and Jenny Lumet, are both actors, and his grandfather was legendary screenwriter and director Sidney Lumet.

After the film is made and edited, Meredith plans to submit it to every major festival, from Sundance to SXSW to Cannes. She knows how to get around the festivals, after all. She created an online entertainment show, All the Way with Alloway, where she traveled the film festival circuit, interviewing major stars about their films.
