Lake Highlands High School grad Garrett Wingfield will headline a jazz quartet performing at Wilshire Baptist Church Feb. 11. The concert is part of Wilshire’s new Arts on Abrams series.
The Garrett Wingfield Quartet, composed of graduate students and recent graduates of the University of North Texas jazz program, will present jazz-infused interpretations of gospel tunes and original compositions. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. in McIver Chapel and is free.
After graduating from LHHS in 2010, Garrett and his twin brother, Luke, went on to TCU, where they played with the TCU jazz ensemble. They now play together in UNT’s One O’Clock Lab Band, considered the top collegiate jazz band in the nation.
Garrett is a composer, arranger and saxophonist. One of his original compositions is featured on “Lab Band 2015,” the One O’Clock Band’s most recent album. A different song on the same album, on which he plays baritone sax, received a Grammy nomination this year.
Arts on Abrams is a new performing arts series sponsored by Wilshire to showcase local talent. In March, it will feature two nights of the play “Amadeus,” directed by former LHHS theater teacher Nancy Poynter. Wilshire is located at 4316 Abrams Road.
