After tornados ripped apart hundreds of properties in December, the City of Dallas library system is helping one school rebuild the book collection it lost to the storm.
Donald T. Shield’s Elementary School in Glenn Heights took a direct hit when tornados ripped apart the neighborhood on Dec. 26. Nothing was spared, from the cafeteria to the classrooms, nearly every building at the school saw some damage, including the loss of the school’s entire book collection.
That’s where you come in — the Dallas library system wants to rebuild Shield’s book collection. All this week through Friday, Jan. 15, every library branch will be accepting donations of new and gently used children’s books. Books are needed for all reading levels, from young children to young adult.
“They need all subjects, all reading levels, bilingual books, fiction, non-fiction and books in Spanish. They hope to collect 500 books — we want to give them 5000,” says Jo Giudice, director of libraries for the City of Dallas, in a statement.
All books collected by Friday will be delivered to Donald T. Shield’s Elementary School, which is working on rebuilding while students are educated at a nearby school in the meantime.
So pack up those unwanted children’s books and head to any branch of the library to support victims of the deadly tornado. Find your nearest branch here.
