Crossroads Diner is moving out of the Lake Highlands area. Teresa Gubbins reports that a rent hike imposed by new property landlord Cypress Equities is to blame. (Note: Do not confuse with Cypress Real Estate Advisors who manage the Lake Highlands Town Center). “They have decided to redevelop the center, and it happened to coincide with the renewal on my lease,” chef-owner Tom Fleming told Gubbins. “They raised my rent and that has forced me to move.” Crossroads will relocate to Preston and Campbell in North Dallas, Fleming says.
Lake Highlands retiree Ingram Schwahn made the WFAA broadcast this week for his ability to attract, house and care for a flock of elusive purple martins. A million Americans put up birdhouses each year in an attempt to attract these birds, who begin migrating to Brazil in July, but many can’t lure them. Schwahn’s martins and their families return to his habitat at Presbyterian Village year after year. At 86, he continues to be an outstanding purple martin landlord.
A fire displaced about ten residents of a Vickery Meadow area apartment community earlier this week, reports the Dallas Morning News. “About 40 to 50 firefighters worked to knocked down the flames. Some residents evacuated themselves before Dallas Fire-Rescue arrived on the scene. No injuries were reported … Three of the building’s eight units were damaged and the American Red Cross responded to help the displaced residents.”
