With its ample, always-buzzing patio, happy hour specials and hearty selection of local brews — Goodfriend is Lake Highlands Advocate readers’ favorite bar, according to our recent poll.

Opened in 2011 by Matt Tobin and Josh Yingling, Goodfriend helped brighten up a blighted area bordering Lake Highlands. “I used to drive by that corner every day. It was a dark, crime-ridden area — it looked miserable,” Tobin has said. “We decided to join the team at Good 2 Go Taco (which opened in the same strip earlier in 2011) in an effort to improve the surrounding area and make it a safer place for our neighbors to enjoy.”

The bar and grill serves up $4 drafts and wells and $5 wine by the glass Monday-Friday from 4-6 p.m. and noon-6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Beer lovers can choose from some 16 American taps and five local taps. Come for the spirits but stay for the food; the menu by Chef Eric Salome contains 100 percent local-meat burgers, innovative sandwiches, mouthwatering sides and a fruit crisp dessert worthy of raising a glass to.

Runner up: Go 4 It Sports Grill

Third: The Royal Pour

Editor’s pick: One heretofore forgotten neighborhood bar (by me, anyway, until just recently) is Kings X, which recently came under new ownership. We profile the place in our July 2015 Lake Highlands Advocate.
