Jamarice Preston after last weekend’s UIL State Track & Field Championship hosted by University of Texas at Austin
Senior Jamarice Preston enjoyed a banner senior year at Lake Highlands High School — captaining three sports, breaking a long-held school record on the track and capturing the silver at the state championship meet last weekend.
At the UIL State Track & Field Championship hosted by the University of Texas at Austin Saturday, Lake Highlands High School senior Jamarice Preston jumped 6 feet, 6 inches to finish in second place in 6-A (the largest classification in the state), shares LHHS track coach Bobby Holland.
Jamarice qualified for the state meet two weeks ago at the Region 2-6A championship hosted by Baylor University, where he also competed in the long jump, 400-meter dash, and on the four-by-400-meter relay team.
Earlier this year, Jamarice ran 400 meters in 47.97 to break the LHHS record. Stanley Redwine, who is now the head track and field coach at the University of Kansas, held the old record for 36 years.
“We’re extremely proud of JP’s accomplishment,” Holland says. “He’s a great kid who dedicated four years of hard work to the sport. He earned it the old fashioned way, and I had so much fun seeing it pay off for him this year.”
Preston was recently named the Most Outstanding Athlete of the Class of 2015. In football, he was a unanimous first team all-district selection and gained the second most receiving yards in LHHS history. He also was a starting guard on the basketball team. He was a team captain in all three sports.
Following Saturday’s meet, the young athlete said, “I just want to thank God and everyone that supported me.”
