Lake Highlands High School has a new Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator – Lonnie Jordan.
Jordan spent the last year as head coach for Lone Oak, a 3A high school, and for the four years before that he was offensive coordinator and assistant head coach at McKinney High.
Most in Lake Highlands, though, remember him as offensive coordinator and JV head coach under Scott Smith.
“Coach Jordan was my quarterback coach at Lake Highlands,” says Harvard grad Ricky Zorn, now preparing for the NFL draft on April 30th. “I cannot say enough good things about him. He cares about his family and his players, and he values character and hard work. He is a competitor and has a great mind for the game. He knows how to get the most out of a player by making football fun. He is relationship oriented, and I believe his abilities to develop relationships at the elementary, junior high, high school and community levels will draw players and parents to him. He is simultaneously a coach, a mentor and a friend. He is a winner, and parents will want their kids to play for him.”
In a message to parents on the Lone Oak website when he was hired, Jordan referenced the old Wildcat doctrine, saying “we will conduct ourselves with Pride, Poise, Class and Discipline.” When he came onboard at Lone Oak, he turned the 7-4 Buffaloes into a 9-2 powerhouse and was named District Coach of the Year. No doubt LH community members will be hoping he returns with some of the magic he worked in Lone Oak. The Wildcats finished the 2014 season with a 4-7 record.
“I am very excited to welcome Lonnie Jordan back to Lake Highlands,” says LHHS Principal Frank Miller, part of the search team which selected Jordan. “He is an ideal match with the profile put together by our community and staff. While his coaching experience and success speaks for itself, the most impressive aspect of his philosophy is a strong commitment to preparing student-athletes for success on and off the field. I invite our students, staff, parents and community to join me in welcoming Lonnie Jordan back to Lake Highlands. Once a Wildcat, Always a Wildcat.”
Jordan, one of 180 applicants for the job, is expected to meet with his team at practice today.
“The Wildcat Club looks forward to hosting a community event in the very near future,” reads a statement on the Wildcat Club website, “to introduce Coach Jordan and allow everyone to hear his plans for working with all stakeholders and student athletes to ensure that Lake Highlands fields the best, most well-run sports programs possible.”
