As we reported in a 2008 story (wow – I have worked here that long), hawks, while beautiful, can be dangerous to small animals such as squirrels and rabbits. They even can make a meal out of a small dog or cat.

“Red-tailed hawks are known to snatch up animals twice their size, one expert told us. Witnesses confirm: One White Rock-area resident says she has seen a hawk swoop down and nab a squirrel.”

In fact, after shooting a photo of the below hawk at White Rock Lake, David Werther says it dove from its branch to snatch up a squirrel.

“It really startled the two other people who were photographing the hawk with me,” Werther notes. “The squirrel wasn’t too crazy about the whole program either.”
