Christina Fuller knew something was up when all the students and teachers at Lake Highlands Elementary trotted outside to the playgrounds Friday morning. Fidgety kids followed instructions to sit in neat rows while teachers whispered, wondering about “the secret.”

Soon, Richardson ISD’s “Prize Patrol” came busting through the doors with balloons and a giant mock-check. They were making the rounds presenting STAR Awards – Superior Teaching Achievement in RISD. Fuller was the sole recipient in Lake Highlands, and her prize was $1,000 from the RISD Foundation.

“Coach Fuller incorporates technology into her lessons,” wrote Jeannie Burkhalter, LH resident and 5th grade teacher, on Fuller’s STAR Teacher nomination. “Students use heart rate monitors and label parts of the body using computer games and iPads.”

“I work with the developmental program at LHE,” said Dee Thomi, another LH resident, “and Coach Fuller works so well with our students that it’s hard to believe that she doesn’t have a degree in adaptive PE. She always makes sure our students are included and that the activities are modified for their needs.”

“She is extremely patient with second language learners,” added Lulu Halley, 2nd grade Bilingual teacher.

“Coach Fuller truly educates us all on how to live better lives by doing physical activities, eating healthily, donating to Jump Rope for Heart, acknowledging our soldiers, joining the LHE softball team, doing a flash mob with students, and leading staff workouts,” praised Veronica Bullard, campus reading specialist.

Fuller heads up the school’s Safety Patrol, sponsors Student Council, coaches a youth soccer team, hosted a Fitness Night for LHE families, conducted a school-wide Turkey Trot, teaches students about food labels, and leads a work out class for teachers.

On hand to congratulate Fuller were her son Zachary, a student at LHE, and her fiancé, Shawn Sumney.
