CatThe University Interscholastic League announced new reclassification and realignment for Texas schools in 2014-2016 at 9 a.m. this morning. Fans of Texas football have been waiting with baited breath.

The district is comprised of: Lake Highlands, Richardson High, J.J. Pearce, Berkner, Highland Park, Mesquite High, Mesquite Horn and North Mesquite.

The cutoff for inclusion in the new 6A is 2100, and Lake Highlands – get this – officially had 2503.5 students at counting time. Highland Park had the smallest number of all schools in 6A – 2106.  (The new 6A is essentially the old 5A, with UIL moving six-man football into Class A status and moving everyone else up a notch. They have not pulled the mega-schools out to a separate district.)

With Jesuit, Skyline, and the other Dallas schools slipping out of our district, it’s time for a whole new set of rivalries to form at Lake Highlands. LH has a history – both positive and negative – with HP. While many students go to camp and to church with longtime HP friends, a few ugly incidents in the past of carloads of students driving back and forth between the neighborhoods looking for trouble will certainly keep the principals on their toes.

Speaking of principals.

HPHS Principal Walter Kelly knows his way around the hallowed halls of LHHS. He helmed our school from 2008-10 before departing for his new gig.

Recent rival Jesuit, meanwhile, is now with Irving and Dallas schools, including Skyline. As a private school they had many students living here in LH, which added to the fun of the competition. They will be missed.

Welcome to a new era of sports in Lake Highlands. Here’s a complete list of the new UIL districts. Go Cats!
