Students at Merriman Park Elementary will be fanning out across Lake Highlands over the next three weeks, collecting spare change for the Pasta for Pennies campaign. Pasta for Pennies is a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and these kids know more than most about leukemia. Beth Lyons, beloved MPE kindergarten teacher, was diagnosed last May. Second grader Hannah English was diagnosed in the fall.

MPE students, who’ve rallied around Lyons and English through the ups and downs of their treatment, have agreed to circulate change boxes in their neighborhood.  They’ve set a goal of $5,000, and donations may be made online here. The class that raises the most money wins a pasta party from Olive Garden.

“I am thrilled to see the entire MPE community team up with such a reputable organization,” said Principal Katie Kirkpatrick. “The LLS raises money for important, life changing research.  This is a great way to honor Mrs. Lyons and Hannah, while also educating our kids on the importance of giving back and caring for our own.”
