2006 Lake Highlands grad Steven LaBrie played Le Dancaïre, a smuggler and booming baritone in the recent Dallas Opera production of Carmen.
The guy is good — listen. He lives in New York and boasts a lengthy list of operatic accomplishments in the seven years since leaving Lake Highlands for The Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia. Add him to the list of very notable LHHS alums.
Among the members of the children’s chorus accompanying LaBrie and the professional cast of Carmen were several Richardson ISD students ostensibly following in the alum’s footsteps. The Dallas Opera’s children’s chorus director is former RISD choral director Melinda Cotton.
A couple years ago we wrote about members of the Dallas Opera children’s chorus, students from St. John’s and Highlander that time. It’s not an easy job — there are late nights and hard work, the kids explained — especially for a youngster.
