Justin Jones, 20, faced capital murder charges for killing 36-year-old Donald Murrow outside Sherlock’s Pub & Grill last October and was representing himself in court. He opted after the first portion of hearings to accept a plea to lesser murder and robbery charges and a sentence of life with possibility of parole, the Morning News reports.

Those who witness the October 2012 shooting called Murrow a Good Samaritan who was killed because he tried to stop a robbery in the restaurant parking lot.

After his arrest last year Jones confessed to a robbery spree and the murder and told authorities he was under the influence of drugs at the time. He told reporters at the time that he felt he deserved the death penalty for taking a man’s life.

The victim’s family reportedly confronted Jones in court this week and offered no forgiveness.

An 18-year-old woman, Tierra Ladarryl Winters, is accused of driving the car used in the robbery.
