After our article about the teardown of the White Rock Trail /Toscana apartments, I was, via social media, connected with local photographer/blogger Matthew T Rader who published a series of images from the abandoned Lake Highlands apartments.

My favorite stories are those that cause us to step into the mental realm slightly outside the boundaries of conventional wisdom — to see a person or situation in a different light.

In Lake Highlands, we generally disapproved of the conditions of the Toscana and White Rock Trail apartments — crime was high and standards were low. We cheered the apartments’ shuttering and turned a collective critical eye toward developers who are putting a new multifamily development in place of the old.

But Rader’s photos don’t take us to that place. Instead they make us stop for a minute to “imagine,” with Rader, “what the people [who lived there] were like and what they did in the spaces …”
