Austin Curnutt, a 2013 Lake Highlands High School graduate, has earned a $4,000 college scholarship from the Chamber Classic Soccer Alliance. The Classic League, as it’s also known, will present Austin $1,000 per year for each year he studies at Oklahoma University. The award is the league’s top scholarship. Thousands of boys from around the Metroplex play Classic League soccer each year.

Austin played select soccer for FC Dallas, competing eight years in the Classic League without earning a single cautionary yellow card. He played Wildcat soccer for four years, serving as captain on both his JV and varsity teams.

Austin graduated 6th in his class with a 101.3 GPA, and his off-the-charts SAT and ACT scores earned him National Merit Scholar status and a scholarship at OU, which woos such students with the same rock-star enthusiasm usually saved for big-name athletes. (OU proudly touts that it enrolls more National Merit scholars than any public university in the country.)

Also while at LHHS, Austin was a Young Life student leader, served as goalkeeper on the Wildcat water polo team, tutored young students in math, and participated in the Professional Internship Program. Austin was also a tutor at Shelton School for learning-disabled children, and he worked as a referee for the Classic League and for kids with special needs.

“Austin’s curiosity is limitless,” said Tracey Bishkin, who teaches AP Psychology, Government and World History at LHHS, “his determination is unflagging, and he is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. Austin has superb character, a delightful nature and natural aptitude for scholastic achievement at the very highest levels.”

Also earning scholarships were Aaron Henry, Lewisville High School, Hardin-Simmons University (to play soccer) $1,500; Colton Huie, North Richland Hills’ Richland High School, Ouachita Baptist (to play soccer), $1,000; Aaron Hawkins, Arlington Martin High School, Texas Tech, $1,000, Chris Johnson, Burleson Centennial High School, West Texas A&M (to play soccer), $1,000.

Congratulations, all!
