The entire neighborhood is invited to Celebrate Independence Day Wednesday, July 3 at Wilshire Baptist Church.
Dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in Wilshire’s Community Hall. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. The church is located just north of Mockingbird-Abrams.
“The concert and the barbeque are Wilshire’s gift to the community,” associate pastor Mark Wingfield says. “We love to invite friends and neighbors in to share our facilities and enjoy our music programs. Everyone is welcome.”

Wilshire Wind Symphony is an all-volunteer wind band directed by James Feltenberger, a longtime Wilshire member. The group plays monthly in Sunday morning worship at Wilshire and puts on special seasonal concerts.
This year’s program is titled “American Scenes” and features both standard favorites and new works. Emcee for the evening will be radio personality Jim White.
One new work on the program, “Celebration of Freedom,” was composed by Wilshire member George Gagliardi. The piece is an opening fanfare for brass choir and full band celebrating the freedoms enjoyed in America.
Other selections to be performed include “The Star Spangled Banner,” “American Civil War Fantasy,” John Phillip Sousa’s “Thunderer,” a fantasy on “Yankee Doodle,” the Richard Rogers favorite “Victory at Sea,” the “U.S. Armed Forces Medley,” selections from Broadway musicals “Oklahoma!” and “West Side Story,” and a unique piece titled “American Legacy No. 1” that combines “Amazing Grace” with “The Yellow Rose of Texas,” “Shenandoah,” “Aura Lee,” “Erie Canal” and “When the Saints Go Marching In.”
