Several local businesses are sponsoring the Big D Duck Derby, the Dallas version of a fundraising event that has grown in popularity nationwide.

Here’s how it works — participants give $5 and get a duck, or presumably a whole flock of ducks if you have the cash. Each adopter gets a number and his/her duck is marked with same number.  Then all the ducks go into a river or pool or body of water and they “race” and the winners’ owners/adoptive duck-parents get fabulous prizes.

So it’s sort of like a raffle, but way more visually stimulating.

The prizes offered at this particular event include a $2500 Visa gift card, $2000 in landscaping and more.
