Lovers of no-frills sushi joints were heartbroken when the hole-in-the-wall Sushi Yama at Forest and Greenville closed (this blogger included).

But now, where there was darkness (in the northeast-of- Forest-and-Greenville strip)there is light, because a new owner, chef Shigeikazu Tateno, has taken over the spot and is opening this week under a comfortingly similar moniker, Yama Sushi.

A Morning News food critic interviewed Chef Tateno last week, after a reader alerted her to a sign on the door regarding the re-opening (how did I miss that?).  She reports that the chef originally learned to cook at his family’s restaurant near Tokyo. He also was the head chef at Dallas’ Sushi Samba.

Tateno reportedly has spruced the place up a bit, installed a new air conditioner and fixed the plumbing; plumbing issues had caused some odor issues near the end of Sushiyama’s days.

Drop in today for the grand opening. 8989 Forest.
