Twenty or so residents of the Enclave at White Rock the other day took paintbrushes to lakeside tree trunks.

Turns out they were engaging in what they hope is a safe and ethical way to prevent beavers from toppling their neighborhood trees.

Members of the Enclave HOA told the Morning News that they considered traps, but concluded that plan ineffective and potentially dangerous to small animals and kids. Painting the bottom of a trunk, a wildlife expert told the News, can effectively protect trees from beavers for several years.

And the residents appear to have done a good job of matching the paint to the trees’ natural color.
