The city’s newest Walmart opened today at Timbercreek Shopping Center, on the southwest corner of Skillman and East Northwest Highway, between the two Target stores.
It is not just any Walmart. It is the second two-story Walmart in the world. The other one is in Hawaii.
Walmart has plans to build six stores in Dallas over the next couple of years, and Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings evidently is a big, big supporter of the world’s largest retailer.
A DMN story about the opening states: “Speaking at the ribbon cutting Wednesday morning, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said he had a message for other businesses eyeing East Dallas, Lakewood and Lake Highlands: ‘Walmart is a good stalking horse. If you go where Walmart goes, other business comes around.’”
We think that means he was inviting other businesses to come join Walmart in our neighborhood.
There are those who think Walmart is one of the greatest companies of all time because of its unstoppable business model. There are others who think Walmart is one of the worst companies of all time for much the same reason. At any rate, Timbercreek was planned before the 2008 economic collapse. That it’s actually coming to existence is a good sign.
So far, Walmart and Whataburger have opened there. Coming soon are JCPenney and Sam’s Club.
