LHHS senior Deborah Andrews (that's her in the blue) sits amid the 150 stuffed animals collected by fellow Girls Service League members for hospitalized and traumatized children

When LHHS senior Deborah Andrews was hospitalized last fall, two women arrived in her room with a large stuffed animal, hoping to help her feel better. They were volunteers with a charity called Adam’s Animals, which delivers a lovey and a smile to children receiving medical treatment. The women’s kindness made a big impression on Deborah, and the polar bear they gave her has been next to her bed at home ever since.

When Deborah and fellow members of the LHHS Girls Service League service committee were asked to come up with a project to help others, Deborah shared her story with the girls. This Thanksgiving weekend, GSL members will deliver 150 new and “gently loved” stuffed animals to Adam’s Animals and their program called S.A.F.E. – Stuffed Animals For Emergencies. There, the animals, donated by the community and collected by GSL members, will be cleaned, fluffed and distributed by local police and fire departments to children in emergencies and other stressful situations.

If you’d like to support Deborah and the LHHS GSL, you can leave stuffed animals on Deborah’s porch this week, 10626 Ferndale, or you can mail a check to the school, 9449 Church Road, 75238.
