2007 LHHS grad Andrew Conwell, shown with fellow members of the SMU Student Foundation, will be front and center at today's events

LHHS grad Andrew Conwell won’t just have a front-row seat at today’s Groundbreaking Ceremony at SMU’s George W. Bush Presidential Library – he’ll play a role in the festivities, presenting Condoleezza Rice with the ceremonial shovel.  Andrew is president of SMU’s Student Foundation.

“Being a student at this time in SMU’s history is incredible,” Andrew told me last night. “The distinguished events I have attended, paired with meeting world leaders such as President Bush, Jim Glassman and Tony Blair, would never have happened at another university.”

Andrew reported to the venue at 7:15 this morning, passing easily through heavy security with his official credentials in hand. He’ll assist in seating the Platinum- and Gold-ticketed guests to their seats, and he’ll hand out commemorative programs. “I could not be more excited about this incredible opportunity.”

Andrew’s mom, Anne, is thrilled about his big day. “Dale and I are so proud of Andrew and the opportunities he has had while being a student leader at SMU. From chairing Family Weekend to serving as President of Student Foundation to being a Student Representative on a committee of the Board of Trustees to serving on the planning committee for SMU’s Centennial Celebration next year, Andrew has chosen to make the most of his college experience by being involved.” Though today’s events are certainly a high-water mark, she added, “Andrew’s proudest accomplishment may have been getting President and Mrs. Bush to show their “pony ears” in a picture he had taken with them at SMU.”

About 2,500 guests are expected at the 10:30 am ceremony.
