First, Aldi said it would sell milk for 99 cents a gallon. Then, several other grocery store chains, including Kroger, Target and Walmart, said they would match Aldi’s price. Which raises a serious shopping and metaphysical question.

What do those of us do who don’t use a gallon of milk a week? Do we buy the 99-cent gallon and throw it out when it goes bad? Or do we buy a $1.59 half gallon and not waste any milk? I’m actually quite perplexed by this. My frugal Midwestern upbringing drummed into me not to waste food. But it also taught me not to waste money. Talk about a quandary.
