If large quantities of greasy, cheesy Mexican fare is your passion, Tex Mex Grill and Cafe at Plano and Walnut Hill is going to make you say, “Yippy ki-yay!” It’s not as dive-y or cheap as Mexicali, but it is similar in a lot of ways. It’s in a strip mall next to a Family Dollar and an Auto Zone. The atmosphere is casual, genuine and friendly. I feel appreciated when I walk in (and isn’t that so important? Really!) and the hostess patiently helps me place an order that will satisfy two hungry pre teens and myself. I order combination (beef and chicken) nachos, the “Cinco Amigos” dinner (chicken, beef and cheese enchiladas, and taco with a mild ranchero sauce for $7.95) and Monterrey Dinner (crunchy bean, beef and chicken tostadas with fresh guacamole and rice for $6.50).

I walked out with a ton of food, and they packed chips and salsa into my to-go bag too, which is a nice touch, and it was all ready in about 10 minutes. They also deliver within a 3-mile radius ($10 minimum). The dining room is spacious — the restaurant even has a party room that seats 40 — and they serve booze. They have a good kids and a la carte menus and several sub-$6 lunch specials until 3 p.m.
