The addition of three assistants to the LH football coaching staff is now official, and all three of the new hires have the added bonus of experience as offensive coordinators.

Cory Campbell, who was the offensive coordinator at Denton High, will coach quarterbacks and be the new passing game coordinator. He replaces Lonnie Jordan, who left to become the assistant head coach at McKinney under former LH defensive coordinator Jeff Smith.

Jeff Brown will be the new receivers coach. Brown was W.T. White’s offensive coordinator two years ago, but did not coach last season after the Longhorns underwent a coaching change.

Shawn Purcell is the new linebackers coach after coaching receivers last season at Wylie. Prior to that, he was the offensive coordinator at Corsicana. Purcell is the son of former Allen coach and current Denton ISD athletic director Ken Purcell. He takes the slot created by the departure of former secondary coach David Hall, who will be the defensive coordinator at McKinney.

“I lost three tremendous football coaches and three tremendous men,” LH head coach Scott Smith said. “The process of going in and replacing them, that was the standard. I wanted three tremendous men and I’m happy to say I’ve done that.”

As part of the staff shuffling, the new LH defensive coordinator will still be a Smith. Judd Smith was promoted to coordinator and will continue to coach the defensive line.

Scott Smith said it’s a luxury adding three coaches who have experience coordinating an offense, which brings its own pressures and responsibilities.

“It’s a nice benefit,” Scott Smith said. “They’re all three great guys. I’m excited about what they bring to the table.”
