When I hear the adage “It takes a village to raise a child,” I conjure images of folks in Ethiopia or some-such far-away hamlet. One LH family is hoping our village will help as they raise their child – a daughter they already consider their own though they haven’t yet finalized her adoption from Ethiopia or brought her home.

Eric and Laura Lakey have been on the waiting list to adopt for two months and are looking forward to traveling to Ethiopia in early 2011. To help pay their travel expenses for two trips to Ethiopia – one for the court date and one to pick her up and bring her home – they are holding a garage sale today and tomorrow (Friday and Saturday) from 7 am to 4 pm at their home, 10036 Faircrest. More than 35 LH families have donated items for the sale, and the Lakey’s birth children, Henry, Owen and Meghan, will be selling their homemade lemonade and cookies for the cause.

The Lakeys will be offering electronics, kitchen items, toys and mountain bikes, and they’re selling baby equipment, including 2 jogging strollers, a crib and a double stroller. They’ve also received lots of furniture, including a girl’s bedroom set, 4 dining room tables with chairs, 2 couches and a Lazyboy recliner. You can get more details on their Craigslist posting. This will truly be a garage sale, because when the family set up their items in the front yard and put up signs, the City of Dallas came down hard with threats of penalties.

If you’re saving some items for that garage sale you’ll never have or if you just want to help, hustle over and say hello. A child can never have too many villagers.
