LH freshmen Katie Ritenour and Berkley Johnson dream of hitting the big time in the fashion world, and this weekend they’ll take a step in that direction. The girls create skirts and hobo bags and they’ll offer their designs at the Gypsy Handmade Market this Saturday in the Knox Henderson area of Dallas.

Last summer, the eco-minded girls began sewing skirts for themselves from fabric scraps and leftover trim at their homes. When friends asked to borrow then purchase skirts for themselves, Katie and Berkley knew they were on to something. They branched out to making hobo bags and selling them at trunk shows in girlfriends’ homes, and now their handmade fashions are all the rage in LH.

The girls were invited to sell their designs at the Gypsy Handmade Market, a hodgepodge of handcrafted clothing, jewelry and gifts set up each Saturday in April and May in the front yard of the Gypsy Wagon, a retail store near Central and Henderson. Katie and Berkley will offer their one-of-a-kind items Saturdays from 10-6 all Spring, then they plan to spend the summer developing a website and taking their earth-friendly designs to a broader audience. If wearing their skirts makes you look as adorable as they do, their success is guaranteed.
