McKinney’s school board approved the hiring of Lake Highlands defensive coordinator Jeff Smith as the new head football coach at McKinney High School on Tuesday night.

Smith had been on coach Scott Smith’s staff at Lake Highlands the past three seasons. He came to LH from Lorena but had previously had worked with Scott Smith at Plano Senior High.

"I could not be happier. He deserves it," Scott Smith said. "He’ll do a great job. In these situations, it’s a real nice reflection on the job we’ve done here. We’re real excited for Jeff. To lose a quality guy like that, it’s going to be tough. But we’ll be fine."

Scott Smith said he did not know when a replacement would be hired. His options include promoting from within and hiring another position coach, or looking outside the program for the next coordinator.

"I’ve started my thought process," Smith said. "You’ve kind of got to have contingency plans."
