The Brooke Nichols Shootout (named in honor of the late daughter of former longtime South Garland coach Garland Nichols) is not a tournament. But it is something of an ambush for the Lake Highlands boys basketball team.
The two-day event, which is really just two showcase games, has Lake Highlands playing two Garland ISD teams in their home gyms. LH plays at Lakeview Centennial at 1:30 p.m. Friday, then at South Garland at 6 p.m. Saturday.
No bracket, no championship. Just two road games for Cats. Other games in the Shootout match teams on neutral floors, but LH gets the double-whammy of playing two GISD teams on their home floors. After having a similar scenario last week at the Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio, the Cats will certainly be road-tested by the time District 9-5A play starts Dec. 18.
Lakeview is 9-1 and ranked No. 7 in the latest state poll. South Garland is 3-6. LH is 6-5 and coming off back-to-back wins in San Antonio.
