Every month (almost) in the Advocate, we run a column called “What Gives” about small ways you can make a big difference for neighborhood nonprofits. In December’s print magazine, we had too many stories and too little space to run the segment, so in addition to the web-extra “What Gives” editor Marlena Chavira-Medford delivered earlier today, here’s a couple more giving opportunities from the December cutting room floor:

STEER RUNNERS …along the course of the White Rock Marathon Dec. 13. The nonprofit group For the Love of the Lake is looking for volunteers to serve as course guides on the marathon and half marathon events (last year the lead half-marathoner missed a turn, so this is indeed a needed service). Course guides receive a White Rock Marathon long-sleeve T-shirt and a front-row view of Dallas’ premiere road race. The marathon benefits the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for children, which treats local children suffering from physical, neurological and learning disorders. THIS MONTH, SHOP LOCAL … at the White Rock Local Market Dec. 14., from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. outside the Green Spot at 702 N. Buckner. This is the last chance this season to shop the market featuring locally produced art, jewelry, clothes, vintage bike parts and more. The market also showcases area musicians and offers special services such as grease, battery and printer cartridge recycling, as well as candle wax recandeling (see the ReCandle booth). Organizers believe that “facilitating the sale and delivery of fresh produce is a solid first step to making the right choices for our community”. Visit whiterocklocalmarket.com for details.

As my co-editor mentioned, there are always volunteer and giving ideas that pop up post-publication. If you have one, send it to me and I’ll do my best to post it here.
