Breast cancer awareness month is behind us now, but as those close to the disease understand all to well, its effects don’t go away. Crystal Jones has recently opened up a shop that she hopes will make life easier for women who have endured breast surgeries.
Women’s Health Boutique, located at Greenville Avenue near Royal Lane, specializes in post women’s surgery products such as prosthesis, wigs and turbans, special bras and incontinence products. They also sell prenatal and post natal products, as well as a few men’s items such as compression stockings.
Jones’ mother Vicki Jones founded the first Women’s Health Boutique in Longview in 1987, before franchising the concept. Crystal Jones, who graduated from college just a couple years ago, says the store offers a much-needed service to our neighborhood. She sells merchandise that can be expensed through Medicaid, Medicare or private insurance. Similar businesses require customers to pay up front before filing a claim. Not so at Women’s Health Boutique, Jones says. “We file the claim with the insurance company so our customers do not need to pay up front. We are the only ones in Dallas who do it this way,” she says. “There are women out there who had surgery 10 years ago and don’t even understand that their insurance might pay for a prosthetic.”
She says she has seen a super turnout in the two weeks since she opened and that it helps to be just a block away from Presbyterian Hospital, where doctors have been telling patients about the store.
