Tonight Richardson ISD will hold its annual College Fair, one of the largest and finest around, with universities from all over the country sending representatives to answer questions, pass out literature, and recruit high school kids from RISD’s respected pool of graduates. The event will run from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the University of Texas at Dallas, and both parents and students are invited.

I first attended this event in September of 2001, just a few days after 9/11. Because all airplane travel was stopped, there were empty tables everywhere with signs marked “NYU” and “Stanford” and other landmark colleges from around the country. That’s when I realized the great effort that RISD Council of PTA organizers give each year to introduce our kids to the endless educational options ahead of them and the successes they have, air traffic permitting, to draw prestigious universities to our area. (Luckily, the Mizzou reps made the drive in 2001 and chatted up my oldest with tales of Truman the Tiger and journalism school bliss. She’s now a happy graduate.)

Attendees needn’t be graduating seniors – it’s a great way to ignite that college curiosity in your underclassmen as well. The Fair will be held in the UTD Activities Center at the center of campus. Parking is limited, but attendees can catch a shuttle from the JJ Pearce parking lot. More information is available on the RISD website or by emailing Tammy Hollowell from the RISD Council of PTAs.
