Lake Highlands football fans may have blocked out details of last year’s game against Mesquite, but there was a lot of good in that game, the 2008 season opener, that got even better as the season progressed. The Wildcats lost a heartbreaker, 38-28, thanks to a fourth-quarter rally by the Skeeters. You can read The Dallas Morning News’ account of the game here.
Mesquite quarterback Luke Halpin, who has since graduated, had the game of his career in leading the Skeeters to 17 consecutive points in the comeback.
The other quarterback, LH’s Ricky Zorn, made his starting debut against Mesquite in 2008. This was just the first of many big games for Zorn, who begins his senior season on Saturday.
The 2008 LH-Mesquite game, played at Wildcat-Ram Stadium, showed that LH would be an offensive force to reckon with, but that the defense was still a work in progress. It took a couple more games for the LH defense to come to the forefront, but when it did, LH was on its way to an undefeated district season.
