By scrimmaging Friday morning, Lake Highlands will have eight days to prepare for the season opener Aug. 29 against Mesquite.
The opener is on a Saturday night, which affords a little extra prep time. Although school starts Monday, coach Scott Smith said that will be a lighter, walk-through day. The team will begin its normal weekly routine on Tuesday, as if it were a Monday and the game was on Friday.
While most teams scrimmage at night, LH and South Garland had a daytime scrimmage. Friday morning’s rain made for a cooler start to the scrimmage. By the time it ended, near 1 p.m., the sun was out and broiling the turf at Homer B. Johnson Stadium. Coaches were barking on the sideline for players to stay hydrated.
Working in the hot sun will no doubt make playing under the lights a little bit easier next week.
