Today, you can indulge yourself in a delicious ice cream and cookie sandwich in the name of helping children. Pokey-O’s, a cookie and ice cream shop located near SMU by La Madeleine, is hosting Project Transformation Day. If you buy a sweet treat between 3 and 11 pm, 20% of the proceeds will go to Project Transformation.

Project Transformation hires about 100 interns each summer to work with about 1000 underprivileged children in the Dallas area. Lake Highlands High School students were some of the additional volunteers who participated by reading with and to young students, hoping to improve their readiness for school in the fall. The volunteers come in and pull away one or two kids at a time for intensive reading help, with buddy-bonding being one of the many side benefits for all involved.

If you haven’t tried Pokey-O’s, you’re missing a delicious treat. It was the favorite of the British referees who stayed in LH during the Dallas Cup soccer tournament, and it will taste even better today since it’s for a good cause.
