School may be out for summer, but girls who aspire to make the Lake Highlands high school, freshman, and junior high volleyball teams are kicking into high gear, preparing for tryouts. Registration is underway for summer camps to be taught by LHHS’ new coach – Melissa Christman. Christman was assistant coach for Highland Park last year, so this camp will be her chance to get to know the LH girls and see what they can do. Forms and fees are due July 1 for the July 20-24 camps, which are open to girls entering 3rd-12th grades.

Many girls have also been attending or will soon attend camps hosted by high-level club teams or colleges, and LHHS’ Free Open Gym nights begin Monday, June 29 to give girls a chance to get some time touching the ball.

The Lady Wildcats are the returning 9-5A district champs at both the varsity and JV level, with five talented returning seniors – Caroline Henton, Rachel Peters, Rachel Zreet, Christina Flanagan, and Melanie Trostel. Last year’s freshman phenom, Matalee Reed, will also rejoin the varsity squad.

Tryouts for the LHHS teams begin August 3, and they’ll play their first game Friday, August 7 in McKinney (calendar here). They scrimmage Highland Park at HPHS on August 11 – a game which has traditionally been our chance to see how the girls look against a strong opponent. It adds a little spice to the game that many of the girls have friends on the HP squad from church, summer camp, and club teams. LH’s first home game is August 18 at 7 pm. Go Cats!
