There were three people voting when I left my polling place at 8:50 this morning. This, of course, was far different from early voting last fall for the presidential election. In the first two days of early voting for the May 9 election, some 10,000 people have cast ballots. In the runup to the November election, we averaged 40,000 people voting early each day.
What does this mean? Who does this help? Your guess is as good as mine. I’d assume that low turnout benefits incumbents, and will help defeat the hotel and subsidy referendums. And it is low turnout, even behind the paces in the 2005 and 2007 city elections despite the convention center hotel debate.
