The RISD 24-Hour Video Race was this weekend, and despite a very valiant effort, our Wildcats didn’t win this year. Team captain Chanel Turnham says had it not been for some issues with the lighting, she’s confident Lake Highlands would have taken the cake.

But technical difficulties or not, we have a lot to be proud of. Video tech teacher Paul Matchniff  and students Chanel Turnham, Garrett Alloway, Jamie Pierce, Chase Bekarian, Andrew Harris, Colton Williams, and Kelvin Bredehoeft put together a very creative video, which you can watch here.

During this competition, students have 24 hours to create a five-minute video, which must include three provided quotes, two props and two locations. This year, the required props were a yearbook, and stuffed animal; Their required locations were an attic and a bench-swing; And their required quotes were: “I’d rather be a hammer than a nail,” and “You lost today kid, but that doesn’t mean you have to like it,” and “Always forgive your enemies—nothing annoys them so much.”

Our Wildcats weaved all that into a spooky spoof film, starring Kelvin Bredehoeft as a stalker—but the twist is, he’s obsessed with a teddy bear, not a person. Hence the clever title, "The Right to Bear Arms."

“The whole time, the audience is supposed to think this stalker is going after the girl, but it turns out he’s just after his teddy bear,” Turnham says. “To see Kelvin act creepy is hilarious.”

And to all those Pearce Mustangs who now have a winning streak going with the 24-Hour Video Race, she says don’t write off the Wildcats just yet.

“They need to be ready for Lake Highlands next year—we’re coming back, and we’re going to be rocking it.”
