When I was a kid, we played Putt Putt. That was the extent of my golfing experience until yesterday, when I was introduced to the new age of golfing for fun at Top Golf in Lake Highlands — no putting involved. Instead, you tee off from a driving bay onto a green with targets ranging in distance from 20 to 240 yards. There’s some sort of micro chip in your balls that tracks your score. You need to remember to run your ball through this little reader before you hit it or you don’t get your points … and that’s how I blew my winning streak —argh! —I hit a bullseye before the machine told me I’d forgotten to register my ball. Once again, I was foiled by my lack of attention to the details.
It was a good time —at one point when I was hitting rather well I thought to myself, ‘I should do this once a week!’. Some of the top golfers seemed to be taking themselves fairly seriously — carrying their own set of clubs, sporting plaid shorts and polo shirts … you know, the whole bit. Also, I was there as part of a party but I heard at the front desk that at about 2 p.m. there was a two hour wait to play. All told, I’ll go back again — and this time I’ll register all my balls.
