Roughly 40 folks, some original plot holders and many new faces wanting to claim plots, attended the February 24th Lake Highlands Community Garden annual meeting (Yes, we’re starting YEAR TWO!)  The main purpose of the meeting was to pay plot fees and discuss the upcoming Saturday and Sunday expansion project which will add 54 more plots to the original 36.

LHCG Organizer A.L. Nickerson opened the meeting by informing everyone that Scott’s Miracle-Gro is funding a large part of the expansion – 6K in cash, 6K in product – as they did a year ago to establish the ‘Founders Garden’.  Additional good news came when LHCG webmaster Lia Darlach, along with fellow gardener Cynthia Alexander, handed over a check to the LHCG for $500 thanks to the Dallas Organic Garden Club, and gardener Nancy Wilson shared the news that she’s working with the ‘Gleaning Network of Texas’ and will head up a 1000 square foot donation garden.

Gardener Steve Clary (pictured), who is the Project Manager for the expansion, then went over in detail the chain of events that will take place starting at sun up Saturday February 28th.  The asphalt removal will be the biggest challenge, followed by the tilling and irrigation trenching.   Throughout the course of the heavy equipment work, asphalt will be hauled off with the help of the City, faucets assembled, lots of digging will be done, and plot boxes built.  Gardener Ron Candler will again be overseeing the irrigation installation.  Steve stressed that safety is our number one priority with the 14K square foot expansion area being cordoned off, and cautioned that this weekend is not the time to bring the kids out.  But all able bodied volunteers are very welcome!  There is much to do to make the expansion of our first ever Lake Highlands Community Garden a success that all the community will benefit from for years to come.  If you would like to come lend a hand, show up at 7901 Gorforth, behind the old Armory off of White Rock Trail, anytime over the weekend.  Bring your gloves, wear long pants and sunscreen, and we’ll be glad to find you a job to do at the LHCG!

Once the expansion is complete, hopefully the week following, A.L. will be at the LHCG and those who have paid for a plot can choose their site.  He will also be able to accept payment and assign any remaining plots. When that day and time is determined I will post a notice.
